Assessment of the lipid profile

A lipid profile, also known as a lipid panel, is a set of tests used to determine the levels of lipids – that is, fat molecules – in the bloodstream. Furthermore, the data obtained from a lipid profile assessment are excellent indicators of the risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Assessment of the lipid profile

Why is this important?

Early detection of risk factors for cardiovascular disease

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide: more people die from these diseases each year than from any other cause.

Monitor and assess the effect of the treatment

In cases where dyslipidaemia – that is, abnormalities in blood lipid/fat levels – has already been diagnosed.

Assessment of the Lipid Profile

What do I need to know?

At Correia Rosa pharmacies, we test for total cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Cholesterol is a natural substance produced by our bodies, which is essential for a number of vital functions. Cholesterol molecules are transported by two types of lipoproteins:

  • Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) – the cholesterol carried by this type is known as ‘bad’ cholesterol or LDL cholesterol (LDL-C);
  • High-density lipoprotein (HDL) – the cholesterol carried by this type is known as ‘good’ cholesterol or HDL cholesterol (HDL-C).

Total cholesterol levels refer to the sum of the various cholesterol fractions, that is, the combination of LDL and HDL cholesterol.

Triglycerides are another class of lipids and are important for storing energy in the body in the form of adipose tissue. However, in high quantities, they can lead to heart problems.

According to the Portuguese Cardiology Foundation, the reference values are:

  • Total cholesterol < 190 mg/dL, for the general population;
  • Total cholesterol<175 mg/dL in high-risk patients (those with coronary heart disease or other atherosclerotic disease, diabetes or renal
    insufficiency);
  • Triglycerides < 175 mg/dL.

At the Caldense, Rosa and Santa Catarina pharmacies, we measure blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels by taking a capillary blood sample. This method is more convenient and less painful, as we only need to prick the finger to obtain a blood sample.

Total cholesterol and triglyceride levels are available within a few minutes of the test being carried out. The results are recorded on the patient’s file and on paper.

You do not need to fast to have your total cholesterol measured. However, to have your triglycerides measured, you must have fasted for at least 12 hours.

To ensure we have sufficient time to carry out the measurements and analyse the results, we recommend booking the service in advance.
